Argentine international Nicolas Tagliafico, aged 32, has reportedly agreed to sign a new two-year contract with Olympique Lyonnais. The defender, who had been out of contract since June 30th, is now expected to rejoin the squad for pre-season training in the coming hours.
Tagliafico maintained his fitness individually from Amsterdam in recent weeks while discussions regarding an extension continued. Lyon consistently held out hope of convincing the player to remain at the club, despite significant interest from abroad.
Although the 2022 World Cup winner received more financially attractive proposals from foreign clubs, he has chosen to continue his journey in Ligue 1. His newly agreed deal will keep him at the club until 2027, with an option for an additional year. This decision provides a rare piece of positive news for Lyon during a challenging summer transfer window, as the club`s spending remains under strict supervision by the DNCG (Direction Nationale du Contrôle de Gestion).
The recruitment efforts of Matthieu Louis-Jean, Lyon`s chief of recruitment, and his scouting unit were crucial in finalizing the agreement, leveraging their long-standing relationship with the player.
Following this positive development, Lyon intends to intensify its efforts to acquire a new first-choice goalkeeper to replace Lucas Perri, who has recently departed for Leeds United. The club is also engaged in ongoing talks for Brest midfielder Pierre Lees-Melou, and is actively seeking to bring in a wide player before the transfer window closes.
