Paarl Royals were dismissed for a dismal 49 runs, suffering the second-biggest defeat in SA20 history as Sunrisers Eastern Cape dominated.

Three-time finalists Sunrisers Eastern Cape (SEC) secured their first victory of the SA20 2025-26 season, completing a hat-trick of wins for away teams after the first round of the group stage. A clear trend has emerged from the opening three fixtures: the visitors have won every game, and the team batting first has prevailed each time.
SEC claimed a convincing opening win against the Paarl Royals, a team that had been unbeaten at Boland Park last season. However, the Royals` lack of bowling depth was severely exposed in this contest. SEC`s innings was built on robust partnerships, notably the 66-run opening stand between Jonny Bairstow and Quinton de Kock, followed by a pivotal 73-run partnership for the fifth wicket between Matthew Breetzke and Jordan Hermann. This effort saw SEC post 186 for 4, marking the third-highest SA20 total at the venue.
The Royals utilized six bowlers, bafflingly giving Jersey international Asa Tribe just one over, which cost a mere one run. Every other bowler conceded eight runs an over or more. In reply, the Royals found themselves in immediate trouble at 7 for 2 after two overs and subsequently crumbled to 49—the lowest total ever recorded in the SA20 tournament. This resulted in the tournament’s second-largest margin of defeat. With a crucial bonus point secured, SEC now sits atop the league table.
An Experimental Number Three
De Kock and Bairstow quickly accelerated, reaching 51 runs within the first five overs and sharing a 66-run opening partnership. Their momentum was finally halted by a moment of brilliance from David Miller, whose diving catch dismissed Bairstow off Ottneil Baartman.
Despite having established batsmen like Breetzke and Tristan Stubbs available, SEC opted to promote Marco Jansen to the No. 3 spot. The experimental move did not pay off immediately; Jansen managed just four runs off his first nine deliveries before finding some rhythm with a cover drive off Bjorn Fortuin.
Fortuin then delivered a significantly slower ball. Jansen attempted a slog sweep prematurely, missing the spin as the ball disturbed his stumps. This dismissal, coming in Jansen`s first-ever T20 appearance at No. 3, saw SEC fall from 66 without loss to 89 for 3 in just 21 balls.
Breetzke and Hermann Finish Strong
With four overs remaining, SEC looked for a powerful finish, relying on Breetzke and Hermann to deliver. The Royals turned to former SEC star Baartman. Breetzke capitalized immediately, hitting a short ball for four to start the 17th over. When Hermann came on strike, Baartman adjusted to fuller lengths, only for Hermann to drive over extra cover for four. Baartman went short again, and Hermann powerfully pulled it over square leg for the innings’ fifth six.
That over provided the impetus for the partnership, which blossomed to 73 runs off 41 balls. Baartman eventually had the final say, bowling Breetzke with his penultimate ball, dismissing him for the fifth time in 13 innings. Hermann, however, continued his charge, bringing up a 26-ball half-century. SEC added a phenomenal 57 runs in their final four overs.
Jansen Strikes Early
Marco Jansen holds the record as the most successful bowler in SA20 tournament history, and it took him only three deliveries of this edition to make an impact. Pitching the ball up, he found the inside edge of Lhuan-dre Pretorius. Pretorius, last season`s leading run-scorer, reviewed the decision, but UltraEdge confirmed the contact, dismissing him for a duck. Jansen’s haul across his SA20 career now stands at 48 wickets.
Nortje Shines Brightly
As fast bowlers vie for spots ahead of the T20 World Cup, Anrich Nortje delivered a compelling statement. Utilizing raw pace and bounce on an otherwise placid pitch, Nortje finished with figures of 4 for 13.
Nortje was introduced in the final over of the Powerplay and immediately had an aggressive Tribe caught off a top edge while attempting to pull a cross-seam delivery. Recalled for the 11th over, Nortje bowled Delano Potgieter with a brutal, full delivery shaping away that shattered the stumps.
In the same over, Fortuin was rushed by another short ball and caught behind by De Kock. Nortje then put the finishing touch on his spell by bouncing Mujeeb Ur Rahman, who fended the ball straight to the keeper. Nortje’s third over yielded three wickets, leaving Paarl Royals reeling at 48 for 8. Five balls later, their opening match nightmare was complete, with 49 balls left in the innings.
