Olympique Marseille has officially confirmed the acquisition of 31-year-old left-back Emerson Palmieri from West Ham United. The Italian international arrived in Marseille on Sunday. While initial reports suggested Emerson might terminate his West Ham contract, Marseille ultimately secured his services with a reported fixed fee of €700,000, along with an additional €300,000 in performance-related bonuses.
Marseille`s Search for an Experienced Left-Back
The move for an experienced left-back became a priority for Marseille following the departure of Quentin Merlin to rival Ligue 1 club Stade Rennais. The club had previously considered options such as Liverpool`s Kostas Tsimikas and Arsenal`s Oleksandr Zinchenko. Ultimately, they settled on Palmieri, who will don the No. 33 shirt for Les Phocéens.
Strategic Acquisition and Future Prospects
Palmieri represents a cost-effective solution, bringing with him valuable Ligue 1 experience from his previous loan spell at Olympique Lyonnais. Furthermore, he is match-fit and expected to be available immediately after the upcoming international break. Speculation suggests that Emerson could soon be joined in Marseille by his former West Ham teammate, Nayef Aguerd, as the club continues to strengthen its squad.
