Pep Guardiola, the former manager of Barcelona, has recently offered crucial advice to his old club. He implores them not to abandon their entire project if they fail to achieve Champions League glory in the coming seasons.
Barcelona recently concluded a dominant domestic campaign in 2025/26, securing their second consecutive La Liga title and the Spanish Super Cup. However, their European performance once again fell short. Despite being heavily favored, Hansi Flick’s team was eliminated from the Champions League in the quarter-finals by Atlético Madrid.
During a media interaction, Guardiola was asked about Barcelona’s recent struggles in Europe. The renowned tactician took the opportunity to share his perspective with Joan Laporta and the club’s leadership:
“What does Barça lack to win the Champions League? The Champions League is a competition that can destroy projects, and I hope that’s not the case at Barça.
“We shouldn’t think that just because you don’t win it, everything that has been built is worthless. The league is the competition that provides consistency and continuity. In the Champions League, you need to reach the decisive stages in good form, without injuries, and refereeing decisions also have a significant impact.
“What matters is that the daily work is excellent, that the team continues to grow and improve, and that they don’t consider the season a failure simply because they don’t reach the Champions League final or win it. The league is what forms the foundation for judging whether a season has been good or not.”
