A year after his departure for Saudi Arabia, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is reportedly nearing a return to Olympique Marseille. The 36-year-old striker is set to sign a two-year contract with OM, choosing a comeback to the Vélodrome over staying in the Gulf region. While official club statements remain cautious, there`s significant optimism behind the scenes about finalizing this deal that brings the Gabon international back to the club he left just a year ago.
Aubameyang prioritized Marseille among his European options after his Saudi club, Al-Qadsiah, sought to terminate his contract to sign a younger forward. This unexpected turn of events paved the way for a potential return to France. Marseille coach Roberto De Zerbi, a long-time admirer of the former Arsenal and Dortmund striker, expressed his strong desire to reunite with him, calling him “a super player and a great person.” De Zerbi`s existing rapport with the Aubameyang family – having played with Pierre-Emerick’s brother, Willy, and known his father, Pierre, for years – also played a crucial role in expediting the negotiation process.
Al-Qadsiah`s sudden decision to change their strategy, despite Aubameyang`s productive season, presented Marseille with an unforeseen opportunity to re-sign a highly experienced forward. Although initial contact proved challenging, eventually established during Aubameyang`s visit to Saint-Étienne, the striker quickly communicated his clear intent to return to OM.
Marseille`s offer of a two-year deal, though significantly less lucrative than his previous record-breaking €32 million Saudi contract, was quickly accepted in principle. Aubameyang chose Marseille`s sporting ambition over more financially attractive proposals from Turkish clubs, other Gulf teams, and even a brief inquiry from Paris FC. This decision was deeply personal; despite his family having settled comfortably in Khobar and interest from Saudi side Al-Ettifaq offering continuity, the allure of the Vélodrome, the prospect of Champions League football, and his faith in De Zerbi`s vision ultimately swayed him. Aubameyang returns to OM not as the highest-paid player, but as a seasoned forward driven by a compelling sense of unfinished business.
