Tensions ran high during Paris Saint-Germain`s 3-0 defeat against Chelsea FC in the FIFA Club World Cup. The match was marked by several heated moments as PSG saw their aspirations for a historic quintuple ended in disappointing fashion. The friction spilled onto the pitch even after the final whistle.
An incident occurred involving PSG coach Luis Enrique and Chelsea striker João Pedro (23) during an argument between Pedro and PSG goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma (26). Footage reportedly showed the manager making contact with João Pedro`s face and neck, leading to the striker falling to the ground.
The PSG head coach defended his actions in his post-match press conference, stating he was attempting to separate the players involved in the altercation. He commented, “It was a completely avoidable situation for everyone. Different people were involved in this. We had to avoid problems. I wanted to prevent it from escalating.”
Despite his explanation, Luis Enrique could potentially face disciplinary consequences. FIFA may decide to open formal proceedings against the coach.
According to FIFA`s disciplinary articles, individuals can be penalized with “at least three matches or an appropriate period for an assault, including punching, elbowing, headbutting, kicking, biting, or spitting against an opponent or any person other than a match official.”
Furthermore, there is a precedent for such actions. The head coach of Guadalajara received a three-game suspension in January after he kicked Nicolás Fonseca (26) during a match against Club Leon.
