Saudi Pro League, the US or Europe - what are Salah's options?
Saudi Arabia is widely considered the primary contender for Mohamed Salah's next career move. His prominent status as a leading figure in both the Middle East and the Arab world creates a compelling and significant connection, making him an ideal 'poster boy' for the region.
From Saudi Arabia's perspective, securing Salah, recognized as the world's foremost Muslim footballer, represents an undeniable strategic acquisition. In 2023, Al-Ittihad notably made a substantial £150 million offer for Salah, which Liverpool ultimately rejected.
This offer was made during Jürgen Klopp's final season at Liverpool, preceding Arne Slot's arrival, and followed a period where Salah delivered an exceptional season of goals and assists for the Reds.
This raises the question: which Saudi Pro League (SPL) clubs might be viable options for him? The four prominent clubs – Al-Ahli, Al-Hilal, Al-Ittihad, and Al-Nassr – all state-owned by the Public Investment Fund (PIF), recognize the immense potential Salah holds in significantly elevating the SPL's global appeal and product.
Beyond these giants, Al-Qadsiah, a club managed by former Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers and financially supported by Saudi oil conglomerate Aramco, could also emerge as a potential suitor for the Egyptian forward.
With Salah entering the final year of his contract, interest in him will likely intensify. The prospect of seeing him alongside Cristiano Ronaldo in the SPL, especially at 33 years old, is highly appealing to the league. However, the financial feasibility of such a transfer remains a key consideration.
"Undoubtedly," affirms football finance expert Kieran Maguire. "Considering Cristiano Ronaldo's reported £170 million annual salary, Salah's current £20 million salary suggests that financial constraints would not pose an obstacle for Saudi clubs."
Maguire emphasizes that the crucial factor will be Salah's personal decision, along with careful consideration of the ongoing geopolitical situation in the Middle East. He adds that while the situation might stabilize by summer, it will undoubtedly influence his choice regarding a potential move.
