In just two weeks, the opening round of Premier League fixtures will have concluded. For certain clubs, a sense of urgency will likely emerge as unaddressed transfer needs from pre-season begin to cause immediate problems on the pitch. It is precisely during these pressured moments that clubs often make their most regrettable recruitment choices.
However, there is still time to prevent such outcomes. The upcoming days are expected to be highly dynamic for the Premier League. Teams that have been negotiating hard for lower prices will now face pressure from head coaches who are desperate to assemble their complete squads for the start of the season. Everyone involved understands who ultimately bears the consequences when transfer window shortcomings manifest on the field.
Therefore, for the five clubs detailed below, the current period could be pivotal for their fortunes over the next nine months. Here`s a breakdown of their essential tasks:
1. Newcastle United
Newcastle United`s fans are well aware that their club`s transfer window is turning into one of the most memorable in recent Premier League history, albeit for all the wrong reasons. Initially, several key targets like Bryan Mbeumo, Joao Pedro, and James Trafford opted for rival clubs. Now, the situation has worsened with their star player, Alexander Isak, reportedly pushing for a departure. Liverpool, having already sold Luis Diaz and potentially Darwin Nunez next, appears ready to shatter the British transfer record if necessary to secure Isak.
Even if Newcastle managed to retain Isak, which seems improbable, this transfer period would still be considered largely unsuccessful. Their primary targets declined their advances, and the incoming players, Anthony Elanga and loanee Aaron Ramsdale from Southampton, primarily serve as squad depth for a Champions League-aspiring team. The long-awaited reinforcement for the right side of their attacking trio remains elusive, as does a right-sided center-back, a position they failed to secure last summer with Marc Guehi. Furthermore, replacements are needed for Sean Longstaff and Callum Wilson within the squad.
Despite these concerns, the Newcastle squad still boasts considerable talent. The potential arrival of Benjamin Sesko to either replace or complement Isak offers a glimmer of hope amidst the challenging circumstances at St. James` Park. However, with a particularly difficult start to the season approaching, Newcastle urgently needs to accelerate their transfer activity.
2. Everton
In contrast to the first club on our list, Everton`s transfer activity at Hill Dickinson Stadium this summer has been notable. Carlos Alcaraz secured a permanent transfer after a strong loan period, Mark Travers provides valuable depth as a Premier League-level backup goalkeeper, and Thierno Barry appears to be the archetypal David Moyes striker, given his considerable height. Adam Aznou also fits the Moyes profile, with his defensive statistics from last season indicating robust solidity as a full-back.
While such acquisitions would be ample for most teams, Everton`s unique financial situation, stemming from their ill-fated involvement with 777 Partners and escalating stadium expenses, necessitates far more. The squad has been further depleted by the departures of Abdoulaye Doucoure, Ashley Young, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin, none of whom generated transfer fees. Manager David Moyes acknowledges the significant work still ahead.
Following the conclusion of the Premier League Summer Series on Sunday, Moyes expressed cautious optimism: “I think there`ll be deals next week. I believe we`re getting much closer, though I had a similar feeling several weeks ago. Clearly, we`re approaching the critical stage, and we need to finalize some agreements.”
The Friedkin Group, Everton`s owners, are clearly striving to ensure Moyes`s statements don`t become a source of regret. As of writing, Everton was nearing an agreement for Chelsea midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and engaged in discussions to sign promising Southampton winger Tyler Dibling. While these additions would significantly bolster the squad, Moyes`s earlier assessment that the team requires “nine or 10” new players remains accurate. The club could greatly benefit from an assertive central midfielder, as well as a creative playmaker capable of immediately invigorating the atmosphere at Hill Dickinson. A player in the mold of Jack Grealish, perhaps?
3. Manchester United
Was it prudent to allocate over $170 million from an already strained budget to acquire the Premier League`s top overperformers in expected goals last season? The long-term value of Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo`s transfers remains to be seen. However, according to their club captain, Manchester United`s squad still requires significant reinforcement.
After a 2-2 draw with Everton in the Premier League Summer Series, Bruno Fernandes told NBC, “It was crystal clear we needed more competition for the players that were here and more quality to get everyone to step up to get into the starting XI. That`s what the club and the manager are trying to do, and hopefully we can get one or two players more to help with that.”
The club may require more than just one or two additions. A central striker is undoubtedly a top priority, with Manchester United reportedly vying with Newcastle for Benjamin Sesko. Should Sesko prove unattainable, Ollie Watkins is said to have admirers at Old Trafford, though signing a 29-year-old nearing the end of his peak carries a substantial financial risk. Beyond a forward, several other positions could benefit from the kind of targeted, strategic recruitment that has been conspicuously absent at Old Trafford recently.
While Fernandes appears well-suited to Ruben Amorim`s double pivot system, the question remains whether Manuel Ugarte possesses the dominant midfield presence needed to partner him effectively in a United team aiming for European qualification. Alternatives like Atalanta`s Ederson and VfB Stuttgart`s Angelo Stiller are still available. Furthermore, the goalkeeper situation warrants consideration; Andre Onana`s tendency for errors often overshadows his otherwise solid performances. Given Jim Ratcliffe`s comments about strained financial resources, the club might need to make do with their current options in this department.
4. Brentford
One could argue persuasively for replacing Brentford with Aston Villa, West Ham, or Wolves on this list. While the Bees have been active in the market and lost their standout player, Mbeumo, they arguably already had his successor within their ranks last season, with Kevin Schade contributing 11 Premier League goals.
Christian Norgaard has also departed, but when it comes to experienced, stabilizing figures, Jordan Henderson is an excellent replacement. The departure of Mark Flekken was likely not a significant blow, especially considering his replacement by Caoimhin Kelleher. Additionally, Brentford has secured Antoni Milambo following an impressive season with Feyenoord, and Michael Kayode showed promise during his loan spell.
Moreover, if any club has demonstrated its capability for effective squad restructuring, it`s Brentford. They ascended from League One to become a Premier League fixture, all while frequently selling their top talent. They successfully navigated the departures of Ezri Konsa, Ivan Toney, and David Raya, even achieving promotion the summer after Ollie Watkins` transfer. Why should things be any different now, simply because Thomas Frank has also left? A new manager can have as profound an impact as a key player, and this club has a proven track record of astute recruitment that can compensate for such losses.
However, considering Brentford now has an unproven head coach and faces the potential loss of Yoane Wissa alongside Mbeumo—which would remove a combined 39 goals from the team without direct replacements—it might be prudent to ensure Keith Andrews, the new manager, is not short of attacking options.
5. Fulham
Despite not yet acquiring an outfield player, Fulham`s pre-season campaign looks promising with four wins from four matches. Their goalkeeping situation is stable, bolstered by the arrival of Benjamin Lecomte to compete with Bernd Leno. According to sources, Reiss Nelson is also keen to return to Craven Cottage following his loan spell last season, with both Fulham and Arsenal motivated to reach an agreement, though Arsenal prefers a permanent transfer.
Should Fulham primarily rely on last season`s squad, they would likely see a slight regression from their upper-mid-table position to lower-mid-table, yet still avoid any major threat to their fifth consecutive Premier League season. However, reinforcing a few key areas would certainly be beneficial. Raul Jimenez, at 34, played the sixth-highest number of minutes last season, and despite Marco Silva`s reputation for revitalizing strikers, the combination of the aging Mexican international and Rodrigo Muniz is not the most formidable attacking duo in the league. Likewise, a new midfielder capable of displacing either Sasa Lukic or Sander Berge could significantly improve Fulham`s control in matches. While the team doesn`t require drastic changes, thoughtful additions could elevate this Fulham squad to a surprisingly competitive level.
6. Chelsea
It has, remarkably, been a full two days without any new incoming transfers, you know…
