India A launched their series against Australia A with an emphatic 171-run victory in the first unofficial One-Day International held in Kanpur. The match, initially delayed by rain on Tuesday, proceeded on the reserve day with India A delivering a batting masterclass that Australia A couldn`t match.
Match Result:
India A 413 for 6 (Shreyas Iyer 110, Priyansh Arya 101, Riyan Parag 67) defeated Australia A 242 (McKenzie Harvey 68, Sutherland 50, Nishant Sindhu 4-50, Ravi Bishnoi 2-49) by 171 runs.
India A`s Record-Breaking Batting Display
After being asked to bat first, India A posted a colossal total of 413 for 6. The innings was anchored by brilliant centuries from opener Priyansh Arya (101 runs) and captain Shreyas Iyer (110 runs). Arya, alongside Prabhsimran Singh, set the tone with an impressive 135-run opening partnership within 20.3 overs, reminiscent of their successful IPL collaboration.
Shreyas Iyer, making a powerful return to List A cricket following his Champions Trophy appearance earlier this year, then took command. His explosive innings included 12 fours and 4 sixes, accelerating India A`s scoring. Contributions continued with vital half-centuries from Riyan Parag (67) and Ayush Badoni (50), ensuring India A crossed the monumental 400-run mark. Remarkably, all of India A`s top six batsmen registered strike rates exceeding 100, with five of them scoring at least 50 runs.
Australia A`s Unsuccessful Chase
Chasing a daunting target of 414, Australia A showed initial resilience, reaching 116 for 1 by the 13th over. However, the dismissal of Cooper Connolly triggered a dramatic collapse. The Australian A side lost their last nine wickets for a mere 126 runs, ultimately being bundled out for 242 in just 33.1 overs, leaving almost 17 overs unused.
Opener McKenzie Harvey top-scored for the visitors with a spirited 68 off 62 balls, while captain Sutherland contributed a rapid 50 off 33 deliveries. Despite their individual efforts, Australia A`s batting lineup crumbled under pressure from India A`s bowlers.
Dominant Bowling Performance
India A`s bowlers, particularly the spinners, played a crucial role in securing the victory. Nishant Sindhu was the standout performer, claiming an impressive 4 wickets for 50 runs. Ravi Bishnoi supported him effectively with 2 wickets for 49 runs, and Ayush Badoni also chipped in with key breakthroughs. Gurjapneet Singh, making his List A debut after being fast-tracked into the squad, also contributed with 1 wicket for 40 runs from his five overs.
Iyer`s Leadership and Squad Dynamics
Shreyas Iyer`s captaincy in this series came as Rajat Patidar, initially named the captain, was redirected to lead the Rest of India side in the ongoing Irani Cup. Iyer, who is currently managing a break from red-ball cricket due to back concerns, remains fully committed to white-ball formats. Looking ahead, India A`s squad will be further bolstered by the arrival of Asia Cup hero Tilak Varma for the remaining two One-Day Internationals.
