Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) is poised to receive a substantial payment of €12.5 million from German club Eintracht Frankfurt. This significant sum is a direct consequence of the recent €79 million transfer of French U23 international forward Hugo Ekitiké, aged 23, from Eintracht Frankfurt to Liverpool.
Ekitiké`s Career Path: From Reims to Paris and Beyond
Hugo Ekitiké first gained widespread attention after an impressive breakthrough season with Reims during the 2021-2022 campaign. His promising performances led to a €29 million move to PSG. However, his tenure in the French capital proved challenging. Ekitiké faced stiff competition for playing time under then-head coach Christophe Galtier, with an already formidable attacking lineup featuring global superstars such as Neymar, Kylian Mbappé, and Lionel Messi. As a result, his impact was limited, and he recorded just four goals and four assists across 33 appearances for the Parisian club.
The Frankfurt Loan and Profitable Sell-On Clause
In the January 2024 transfer window, Ekitiké transitioned from PSG to Eintracht Frankfurt on an initial loan deal. This agreement included an option for Frankfurt to make his transfer permanent for €16.5 million, which they duly activated. Crucially for PSG, the deal also incorporated a 20% sell-on clause, ensuring they would receive a percentage of any future profit Frankfurt made from selling the player.
Eintracht Frankfurt has reportedly generated a considerable profit from Ekitiké`s recent sale to the Premier League champions, Liverpool. With the forward moving for €79 million and having been acquired for €16.5 million, Frankfurt`s profit stands at €62.5 million. Based on the agreed 20% sell-on clause, Paris Saint-Germain is now entitled to a €12.5 million bonus, demonstrating the long-term financial benefits of such strategic transfer clauses.
