Rachin Ravindra will be sidelined for the three-match T20I series against Australia.
New Zealand`s burgeoning talent, Rachin Ravindra, will unfortunately miss the upcoming Chappell-Hadlee T20I series against Australia. The promising all-rounder sustained a significant facial laceration during a fielding drill on Tuesday, necessitating his withdrawal from the squad.
The incident occurred at Bay Oval in Mount Maunganui when Ravindra collided with the boundary boards during practice. Although he passed initial concussion assessments, the injury to his upper lip and nose area was severe, requiring intricate and specialized stitching. The recovery period will prevent his participation in the series.
James Neesham Steps In as Replacement
Experienced all-rounder James Neesham has been named as Ravindra`s replacement in the New Zealand squad. Neesham recently represented the Blackcaps in a T20 tri-series held in Zimbabwe earlier in July.
Coach Rob Walter Expresses Disappointment, Emphasizes Wellbeing
New Zealand head coach Rob Walter conveyed his disappointment regarding Ravindra`s injury. “We`re all truly disappointed for Rachin, who is now forced to miss this important series,” Walter stated. He detailed the nature of the injury, explaining that the facial laceration requires time to heal after specialist stitching.
“Rachin is undoubtedly a crucial player for our team, but his health and wellbeing remain our utmost priority,” Walter added. “Consequently, the decision was made for him to return home to recuperate, with a view to him being fit for the England series slated to begin in two weeks.”
A Blow Amidst Strong Form and Extensive Absences
Ravindra`s absence is particularly impactful given his stellar T20I performance this year, where he has recorded impressive scores of 69, 30, 3, 63, and 47 in his last five innings. His exclusion further compounds an already lengthy list of unavailable players for New Zealand in this series. Key personnel missing include:
- Mitchell Santner (abdominal injury)
- Will O`Rourke (back)
- Glenn Phillips (groin)
- Finn Allen (foot)
- Adam Milne (ankle)
- Lockie Ferguson (hamstring)
- Kane Williamson (unavailable)
With Neesham joining the team, top-order batter Tim Robinson is also being considered as a potential starter for the series, which sees three matches against Australia scheduled across a tight four-day window.
