During the live broadcast of the Italy-Israel football match on Tuesday night, Alessandro Antinelli, a presenter for RAI Sport, was seen wearing a black ribbon. This powerful gesture was made to commemorate the `250 journalists killed in Gaza`, drawing significant attention to the human cost of the conflict.
Antinelli further elaborated that the ribbon served as a tribute to the 250 media professionals who have tragically lost their lives in Gaza over the past two years. He explained that these journalists were attempting to report from the conflict zone but, regrettably, did not return home. In his statement, he also referenced the United Nations commission of inquiry, which has described the events in Gaza as a `genocide`, highlighting the severe nature of the situation.
Leading up to the match, the city of Udine witnessed a large peaceful demonstration, where over 10,000 individuals gathered in the city centre to protest. However, a small faction of agitators was involved in confrontations with the police just before the game commenced, leading to minor disturbances.
Despite the events outside the stadium, the football match proceeded as scheduled. It concluded with Italy defeating Israel 3-0, a decisive victory that secured Italy at least a second-place finish in Group I of the qualifiers.
