Scottish Premiership club Rangers have officially announced the season-long loan signing of 27-year-old central defender Derek Cornelius from Olympique de Marseille.
The Canadian international initially joined Marseille last summer from Malmö FF. Despite making 21 appearances during the previous season, Cornelius found it challenging to secure a regular starting spot under manager Roberto De Zerbi. A notable instance of this was when De Zerbi opted to play midfielder Geoffrey Kondogbia (32) in central defence ahead of him.
Rangers Secure Option to Make Deal Permanent
Cornelius`s departure from the French club seemed increasingly likely as Marseille actively pursued new defensive reinforcements in the transfer market. Although Italian Serie A club Cremonese reportedly made an attempt to intercept the deal, Cornelius ultimately finalized his transfer to Scotland, choosing Ibrox as his next destination.
The agreement sees Cornelius join the Glasgow-based club for the entirety of the upcoming season. Crucially, Rangers have also secured an option to make the Canadian international`s transfer permanent once the loan spell concludes, giving them the opportunity to retain his services beyond the current campaign.
