RC Lens has officially announced the acquisition of Matthieu Udol, the 29-year-old left-back and captain from FC Metz. Udol, a loyal product of the FC Metz Academy who dedicated 19 seasons to the club, was instrumental in leading “Les Grenats” to their recent promotion to Ligue 1.
The seasoned defender has committed to a three-year contract with Pierre Sage’s “Sang et Or” (Lens). The transfer agreement between Lens and Metz was reportedly finalized for a total of €5 million, which includes €1.5 million in performance-related add-ons.
FC Metz had openly expressed their strong desire to retain their captain`s services. However, Udol`s determination to join Lens led him to notably skip Metz`s pre-season training, a move that created considerable tension.
Metz head coach Stéphane Le Mignan voiced his disturbance regarding the situation, remarking, “If we were still in Ligue 2, I could understand. But we`re in Ligue 1 now!” Le Mignan emphasized his focus on players who are committed to working.
Matthieu Udol will proudly wear the number 14 jersey for RC Lens.
