Real Madrid supporters voiced strong disapproval regarding the standard of officiating in La Liga on Saturday evening, following a controversial incident during the match between Atlético Madrid and Barcelona.
The controversy arose early in the second half at the Metropolitano when Barcelona’s Gerard Martín was initially shown a straight red card for a strong challenge on Atlético Madrid’s Thiago Almada. However, after a VAR review, the decision was overturned, with officials determining Martín had touched the ball first. The red card was subsequently downgraded to a yellow card.
This overturned decision immediately drew the ire of Real Madrid fans. Still reeling from their team’s damaging defeat to Mallorca earlier in the day, the Blancos faithful took to social media to express their outrage. Many alleged ‘corruption’ and unfair treatment within Spanish football, drawing comparisons to previous refereeing decisions involving their own club and questioning the consistency of VAR implementation.
