La Liga giants Real Madrid have been dealt a significant blow this week regarding their squad, following confirmation that star goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois is facing an extended period on the sidelines.
Courtois had started Tuesday night’s Champions League encounter against Manchester City. However, the Belgian shot-stopper was substituted after just 45 minutes at The Etihad, raising immediate concerns.
Initially, post-match comments from Álvaro Arbeloa attempted to downplay the situation, expressing confidence that Courtois would be available for the upcoming Madrid Derby. However, subsequent medical evaluations have painted a different picture.
A statement released by Real Madrid confirmed the diagnosis: “Following tests carried out today on our player Thibaut Courtois by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a muscular injury in the rectus femoris of his right quadriceps.”
Reports from club insiders indicate that Courtois is expected to be out of action for approximately six weeks. This recovery timeline means the veteran goalkeeper will likely miss crucial matches, including both legs of Real Madrid’s Champions League quarter-final tie against Bayern Munich, as well as several important La Liga fixtures.
