During a recent intensely contested Madrid Derby in La Liga, referee José Luis Munuera provided a clear explanation for his decision to dismiss Federico Valverde, a move that ignited strong reactions from Real Madrid personnel.
The incident occurred in the second half of the match, which saw Los Blancos secure a hard-fought 3-2 victory over city rivals Atlético, thanks to a brace from Vinícius Jr. and a goal from Valverde himself. However, the celebratory mood was somewhat dampened by the Uruguayan midfielder’s early exit.
Valverde was involved in a foul on Álex Baena, and while many expected a yellow card, the referee surprised all by immediately brandishing a straight red. This unexpected decision left Real Madrid’s bench, including head coach Álvaro Arbeloa, in a state of shock and disbelief.
To address Arbeloa’s visible frustration, Munuera approached the sideline. There, the official was reportedly heard offering a succinct explanation for the dismissal: “He does not go for the ball, only player.” This statement clarified the referee’s perception that Valverde’s tackle was intentionally directed at the opponent rather than an attempt to play the ball, thus justifying the straight red card.
