Rennes is reportedly aiming to sign two key players from Olympique Marseille: 23-year-old left-back Quentin Merlin and 30-year-old midfielder Valentin Rongier, according to a recent report from Le Parisien. The Brittany-based club is making significant progress in their pursuit of France U23 international Merlin, having already initiated discussions with Marseille’s Sporting Director, Medhi Benatia.
The move for Merlin comes as Rennes seeks to bolster their left-back position following Adrien Truffert`s €17 million transfer to AFC Bournemouth. Truffert, a Belgium-born France international, was identified by the Cherries as a suitable replacement for Milos Kerkez, who recently joined Premier League champions Liverpool FC. Merlin is currently under contract with Marseille until 2028 and featured in 29 matches for Roberto De Zerbi’s squad last season.
In addition to Merlin, Rennes has also expressed interest in Valentin Rongier, who previously played for Nantes, Rennes’ long-standing rivals. The experienced midfielder is nearing the end of his contract, set to enter his final year after declining a new deal from Marseille. Given his contractual status and extensive experience in Ligue 1, Rennes views Rongier as a strategic market opportunity. However, Rennes is not the sole club vying for Rongier’s signature. Marseille is expected to facilitate the versatile midfielder`s departure should their transfer demands be met.
