Olympique de Marseille is reportedly exploring the possibility of bringing forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, aged 36, back to the club this summer. This potential move is said to have received the approval of incoming head coach Roberto De Zerbi, according to sources cited by L`Équipe.
Just one year after transferring to Saudi Pro League side Al-Qadisiya, the Gabon international is anticipated to be released from the final year of his financially beneficial contract. Despite a productive debut season where he netted 17 goals and formed a solid partnership with Colombian forward Julián Quiñones, Aubameyang is reportedly not part of Al-Qadisiya`s future plans as they look to recruit younger striking talent.
Marseille, facing competition from clubs in Spain and Turkey, has reportedly made initial contact with the former Arsenal and Barcelona player to ascertain his willingness and current contractual status. OM president Pablo Longoria and his team are reported to have engaged in informal discussions with Aubameyang earlier this week while he was visiting Saint-Étienne to attend his nephew`s trial at ASSE.
Sources close to the club indicate that De Zerbi has given his blessing for the potential acquisition. The Italian coach is reportedly keen to enhance his squad`s attacking options with experienced players. While Amine Gouiri is currently the primary option up front, Aubameyang`s profile is considered compatible. His existing familiarity with both the club and the city is also viewed as a significant benefit.
Aubameyang had a highly successful 2023/24 season for Marseille, scoring 30 goals across all competitions, despite initially facing skepticism from the Stade Vélodrome crowd. His strong performance towards the end of the season significantly re-established his value in Ligue 1, and he is understood to remain in communication with key figures at Marseille.
The financial terms of any potential return are expected to be the primary obstacle. However, OM is reportedly closely monitoring the situation, a strategy that echoes their opportunistic signing of Luiz Felipe in January after his release from Al-Ittihad.
