Roberto De Zerbi on Dressing Room Brawl: “I’m Used to the Streets, But Bodyguards Protecting Us…”

Football & Cricket

Marseille`s training facility was crowded with journalists on Friday as manager Roberto De Zerbi addressed the week`s most significant controversy in French football. The club has put Adrien Rabiot (30) and Jonathan Rowe (22) on the transfer list following a physical altercation in the dressing room. This incident occurred after Olympique Marseille`s 1-0 opening league defeat to Stade Rennais. De Zerbi spoke publicly about the matter for the first time at this press conference.

De Zerbi began the conference with his own prepared statement, referencing Benatia: “I`ve been involved in football for many years and am accustomed to discussing dressing room matters, but certain issues demand resolution. It`s imperative. I pose a question to you: In any professional environment, if two colleagues engage in a fight, similar to a brawl in an English pub, resulting in one losing consciousness, what course of action should an employer take in France?”

He continued, “There are only two viable options: either suspension or dismissal. Benatia and Longoria held discussions over the phone on Saturday and Sunday. We then waited until Monday to make our official announcement. A definitive decision was reached to suspend both players from the squad while we assess their situation. It`s crucial that within a football club, just like any other organization, a clear hierarchy is maintained.”

De Zerbi described the incident: “This particular fight, where bodyguards were required to intervene, defend us, and separate the players, was truly a unique experience for me. I don`t wish to overstate the gravity – after all, I grew up on the streets and am quite familiar with such occurrences. However, witnessing bodyguards having to protect us…”

He further elaborated: “While no bones were broken, I had never witnessed such a violent altercation previously. I saw the doctor attempting to revive the unconscious player on the ground, with Rowe and Rabiot still engaged in the fight… On the field, you`re expected to demonstrate courage, as the saying goes. But such aggression is unacceptable between teammates. No individual should ever perceive themselves as superior to the club. While talented players and coaches exist everywhere, we must all learn to conduct ourselves appropriately and understand our roles. This approach will ultimately prove beneficial for everyone.”

De Zerbi acknowledged the immediate impact: “Tomorrow, we will be forced to play without both Rowe and Rabiot, which will undoubtedly be challenging. I could have chosen to ignore the situation or pretend it didn`t happen. However, I refuse to compromise my integrity just to potentially win a championship; my loyalty will always lie with the club.”

Olympique Marseille (Les Olympiens) are scheduled to play Paris FC at the Stade Vélodrome tomorrow afternoon, marking their second Ligue 1 match of the current season.
