Ollie Robinson showcased his formidable talent, claiming a superb six-wicket haul that propelled Sussex to a dominant position on the opening day of their County Division One match against Worcestershire.

Robinson`s destructive spell began in the very first over with two early wickets, culminating in a season-best performance of 6 for 68. Alongside Jaydev Unadkat, who took 4 for 43, they dismantled Worcestershire`s innings for a mere 123 runs.

In response, James Coles crafted a magnificent century, while captain John Simpson remained unbeaten on 62, steering Sussex to 228 for 5 by stumps, establishing a significant lead of 105 runs. Earlier, Dan Lategan was the top scorer for Worcestershire with 41, with Matthew Waite and Gareth Roderick providing the only other notable contributions.

Worcestershire`s Early Collapse

Fresh from their One Day Cup final victory on Saturday, but already relegated, Worcestershire were abruptly brought back to reality by Robinson`s fiery opening spell, which saw the former England international snatch four wickets within the first hour.

The rout began with Rehaan Edavalath caught behind off the third ball. Pears captain Jake Libby then saw his off stump uprooted just one delivery later, leaving Worcestershire reeling at 1 for 2.

Nineteen-year-old Lategan attempted a stylish counter-attack, expertly finding gaps through the offside. However, Robinson maintained his relentless assault, securing two more wickets, including first-class debutant Isaac Mohammed, who was trapped lbw. The challenging opening hour concluded with Rob Jones also falling lbw, leaving the hosts struggling at 36 for 4.

Despite Lategan`s efforts to rebuild, Worcestershire`s troubles mounted when Gareth Roderick (22), after a promising start, was caught behind off Unadkat. Robinson then completed his five-wicket haul by dismissing the resilient Lategan for 41.

Robinson nearly secured his sixth wicket in a morning session heavily influenced by the bowlers, but the umpires were unconvinced by Simpson`s rebound catch behind the stumps. Worcestershire went into lunch at 91 for 6.

Unadkat Joins the Attack, Sussex in Control

After the break, Unadkat continued his success, claiming Ethan Brookes as his second victim, caught cleanly by Coles at slip.

Unadkat further boosted his season`s wicket tally to 13, dismissing Tom Taylor caught behind for nine and trapping Ben Allison lbw for a duck, as Worcestershire`s collapse continued unabated.

Robinson completed his impressive six-wicket haul by bowling Matthew Waite, who was the last man out for 33, bringing Worcestershire`s innings to a close at 123.

Sussex`s Resilient Batting Reply

Worcestershire, however, mounted a resilient fightback, with Ben Allison spearheading an inspired early spell. He captured three crucial wickets, reducing Sussex to 67 for 4.

Allison`s impactful spell included trapping Hughes lbw for 24, taking a spectacular one-handed caught-and-bowled to dismiss Carter, and bowling Alsop for a single run. Simultaneously, Taylor claimed his 51st Championship wicket of the season, helping to pull the hosts back into contention.

Despite Worcestershire`s efforts, Simpson and Coles spearheaded a robust revival for Sussex. Their fifth-wicket partnership flourished, adding 90 runs before tea, with Coles reaching a fluent fifty.

In the evening session, both batsmen surpassed 1,000 first-class runs for the season. Coles brought up his century off just 105 balls before being bowled by Ben Gibbon. Simpson, alongside the fading light, then saw out a highly successful day for Sussex.
