Giuseppe Rossi opens up about his emotional time at the Parma academy, his unexpected impressions of Sir Alex Ferguson during his Manchester United tenure, and his involvement in a particular anecdote from Roy Keane`s autobiography.

Once considered a promising talent for Italian football, the striker showcased moments of brilliance, but his career was frequently disrupted by a series of unfortunate injuries.

Born in New Jersey to Italian-American parents, Rossi joined the Parma youth academy when he was 12, subsequently moving to Manchester United.

“I was reluctant to leave, but I also didn`t want to disappoint my father. So, we moved to Salsamaggiore, while my mother and sister Tina stayed in Clifton, New Jersey,” Rossi shared with La Gazzetta dello Sport.

“It was tough; I was shy, an introvert, and struggled to make friends. My teachers believed my sole purpose was football, offering no support. I`d cry every night until my mother visited. The football pitch was my only sanctuary.”

Upon joining Manchester United at 17, Rossi had the opportunity to train under the renowned manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

“He struck me as a stern individual, yet he was also caring and observant, a truly paternal figure who understood how to nurture young talents. He protected and encouraged them, fostering their development as both individuals and athletes, instilling clear values and discipline.”

Regarding training, he noted: “Training felt like a different sport compared to what I was used to – the pace and intensity were brutal. There was no room for friendships during drills, just shoves, kicks, and aggression. I quickly understood what was required to earn respect within that team. Lacking the physical strength of others, I had to rely on my technical skills and football intelligence.”

Rossi also disclosed that he was the unnamed player in a memorable anecdote from Roy Keane`s autobiography.

Keane recounted an incident during training where he admonished a young Italian player for failing to pass the ball. This youngster responded with an intense, defiant stare. Keane noted that had the player spoken, he might have reacted physically, but the silence and the powerful gaze communicated everything. Consequently, Keane approached him to shake his hand.

Rossi confirmed: “That kid was me. And I have absolutely no recollection of it! I must have been completely focused, my drive to build a career was all-consuming.”

Recently, Rossi commemorated his career during `Pepito Day` at Fiorentina, alongside numerous former teammates.
