Salman Agha Defends Pakistan Bowlers’ Aggression, Eyes Asia Cup Title

Cricket News

Pakistan`s fast bowlers are expected to maintain their aggressive approach in the upcoming Asia Cup final against India. Captain Salman Agha voiced full support for his team`s right to assert themselves on the field, provided they stay within acceptable boundaries.

If someone wants to be aggressive on the ground, then why not? If you deprive a fast bowler of their aggression, then what`s left? Every player knows how to deal with their emotions. I give players license to react the way they want at the ground. As long as they`re not disrespecting anyone and stay within the line, I have no issues with that.

This sets the stage for another high-intensity India-Pakistan encounter, their third in as many weeks, with the championship title at stake. Following their previous match, Pakistan`s Haris Rauf and Sahibzada Farhan faced penalties for breaching the ICC`s code of conduct. Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav also received a similar penalty for remarks made after their group stage game.

Notably, after the last Sunday`s game, India declined to shake hands with their Pakistani opponents, a decision Agha found unprecedented in his cricketing career. This action reflected the strained relations between the two nations following recent military conflict.

I`ve been playing cricket professionally since 2007, and I`ve never witnessed a refusal of handshakes between two teams. My dad is a huge fan of cricket and used to tell me about its history. He never told me about any game where there`s not been a handshake. I`ve heard it`s never happened before.

When India-Pakistan games took place in even more tense situations, handshakes always happened. Not to have handshakes is not good for cricket. If someone wants to be aggressive, whether they`re from my team or their team, I have no issues with that, but you should shake hands at the end of it.

It appears unlikely that handshakes will take place before or after the upcoming final.

While India has recently downplayed the significance of matches against Pakistan, Agha holds a different view.

It would be wrong to say a Pakistan-India match doesn`t carry more pressure. It`s the final. There`ll be a similar amount of pressure on both sides. The pressure of a final is different, of course.

We can`t control what`s happened out of the ground… We are not focused on what people on the outside are saying. We`re here to win the Asia Cup and that`s our only focus.

Personally, Agha has had a limited impact on the tournament, with 31 other batters outscoring him at a better strike rate (his is 78.04).

He acknowledged his personal struggles, despite leading Pakistan to their second Asia Cup final in over a decade. He noted, “My performance hasn`t been up to the level it should have been and I am working on that. In T20 cricket, strike rate is important, but at the end of the day, you have to see what the situation demands and the team needs.” He stressed adapting play to the match situation rather than solely aiming for a high strike rate.

Pakistan has maintained the same playing XI for their last three games, despite batting concerns, notably Saim Ayub`s four ducks in six matches. The team`s bowlers have largely compensated for the batting lineup, particularly when setting targets.

The team often posted sub-par totals, yet successfully defended the two lowest scores in this tournament. With Pakistan reaching the final, fans and Agha himself are beginning to speak of destiny. Agha quipped, “Everyone knows we haven`t batted to our full abilities this tournament, but maybe we`re saving the best for the final.”
