Samuel Umtiti, the esteemed 31-year-old French defender, has officially declared his retirement from professional football. A distinguished graduate of the Lyon Academy, Umtiti had been a free agent following the conclusion of his two-year contract with Lille OSC. His career was notably plagued by numerous knee injuries, which prevented him from playing since January 2024. Ultimately, he made only 13 appearances for Les Dogues.
“After an intense career marked by both triumphs and challenges, the moment has arrived to bid farewell… I gave EVERYTHING with passion and hold no regrets. I extend my profound gratitude to all the clubs, presidents, coaches, and players I had the immense privilege of collaborating with.”
Umtiti`s football journey was significantly defined, in more ways than one, by France`s triumphant campaign in the 2018 World Cup. The then-Barcelona center-back famously netted Les Bleus` decisive goal against Belgium in the semi-finals. Remarkably, Umtiti endured the entire tournament despite grappling with a knee injury, a decision that reportedly impacted his health and career trajectory thereafter.
He now stands as the fifth member of France`s legendary World Cup-winning squad to hang up his boots, joining Blaise Matuidi, Hugo Lloris, Raphaël Varane, and Steve Mandanda in retirement.
