England`s past strategy against Scott Boland on their home ground could inform their approach in the upcoming series.
Australian coach Andrew McDonald has cautioned England, emphasizing that Scott Boland will be a formidable opponent on home soil. He dismissed the notion that England has successfully deciphered Boland`s bowling, suggesting such a belief is misguided.
Boland`s significance in the upcoming Ashes series this summer is growing, partly due to uncertainties surrounding captain Pat Cummins` availability for multiple matches.
Four years ago, Boland, then 36, made his Test debut against England on Boxing Day, achieving cult-hero status with an incredible second-innings haul of 6 wickets for just 7 runs.
His only significant setback in Test cricket occurred during the 2023 Ashes, where England batsmen aggressively targeted him, disrupting his line and length at both Edgbaston and Headingley.
Remarkably, Boland`s career average of 16.53 stands as the best for any bowler over the last century. Furthermore, his economy rate of 2.75 runs per over makes him the most economical regular fast bowler since his debut.
However, in the 2023 Ashes, he managed only two wickets at a high average of 115.5 across two Tests, with English batsmen advancing down the pitch and scoring at a rate of 4.91 runs per over against him.
This performance led former England captain Michael Atherton to suggest that Cummins` back injury would significantly benefit England, as they reportedly harbored no apprehension towards facing Boland. McDonald, however, remains unconvinced by this perspective.
McDonald attributed Boland`s struggles to the “lack of bounce in the benign conditions in England,” suggesting the environment played a role against him. He acknowledged media speculation about England cracking Boland`s code but asserted, “When he returns to Australian conditions, he generates bounce, hits the pitch hard, and becomes a truly challenging bowler.”
With his reputation preceding him on home turf, the question remains: Will this be a monumental Ashes series for Scott Boland?
McDonald further highlighted Boland`s effectiveness by recalling that Indian captain Rohit Sharma rated him as the best bowler of last year`s series against India, a significant commendation from an opposition leader.
To support his argument about conditions, McDonald referenced a brief spell Boland bowled under heavy cloud cover at Edgbaston during the 2023 Ashes.
He explained, “We observed the overhead conditions during that short period at the end of day three, and when he bowled a few overs under those cloudy skies, he appeared capable of taking a wicket with every delivery.”
McDonald concluded, “Therefore, we are confident and comfortable that Baz (Boland) can perform effectively in Australia, a feat he has consistently achieved. The natural bounce of Australian pitches will certainly play to his advantage.”
McDonald also assured that Australia possesses ample depth in its fast-bowling ranks to manage potential injuries, noting that since December 2022, they haven`t needed to use a frontline pacer outside of Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, or Boland.
Captain Cummins is expected to gain more clarity later this week regarding his chances of playing in the first Test, as he requires at least four and a half weeks of bowling practice beforehand.
The compressed schedule between the last three Tests could pose workload management challenges, especially if the third Test in Adelaide extends to its full duration.
McDonald remarked, “While it would be ideal to finish the summer having used only four fast bowlers, we are well-equipped with strong alternatives like [Brendan] Doggett, [Sean] Abbott, and [Michael] Neser. Jhye Richardson is also expected to return around the series` midpoint.”
He concluded, “Therefore, I believe we have excellent options should our primary bowlers be unavailable, which truly highlights the strength of our domestic cricket system.”
