Men's European Championship: Poland and France to Contend for Continental Title
The semi-finals of the European Championship, held at the Unipol Forum in Milan, saw Poland and France emerge victorious. They will now compete for the continental title in the upcoming final. Poland, coached by Nikola Grbic, defeated Slovenia 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-18) in a match lasting one hour and thirty-two minutes before a crowd of 7,000 spectators.
Following this, Andrea Giani's French team beat Finland 3-1 (25-17, 18-25, 25-18, 25-15). Finland had previously eliminated Italy from the tournament.
Poland vs. Slovenia
After an even start at 5-5, Poland pulled ahead to 9-6, prompting Slovenia's coach Fabio Soli to call for a timeout. Nik Mujanovic quickly scored for Slovenia, but Poland maintained its lead at 15-12, demonstrating consistent quality. With captain Tine Urnaut sidelined due to a foot fracture sustained earlier in the tournament, Slovenia pushed hard but found themselves trailing by six points (20-14) as Poland seemed set to take the first set. Slovenia managed to close the gap with four consecutive points (20-18), but the reigning European champions responded, leading 23-19. An unforced serving error from Klemen Cebulj ultimately handed the set to Grbic's squad (25-23).
Poland continued to control the early stages of the second set (10-7), while both teams engaged the crowd with exciting rallies. Just as Slovenia seemed to be closing the gap, Poland responded with two consecutive points from their top scorer, Bartlomiej Boladz (14-10). However, Alen Pajenk and his teammates remained determined, narrowing the deficit to one point (15-14) and eventually leveling the score with an ace from Mujanovic. The set remained tightly contested at 21-21 before a successful challenge by Poland put them at 23-21. Wilfredo Leon then delivered a powerful cross-court attack. Despite another ace from Mujanovic, Poland secured the set and doubled their lead in the match with another winning attack from the number 9 player (25-23).
Facing a two-set deficit, Slovenia started the third set with renewed energy, taking an early 4-7 lead. Poland, however, rallied and took their first lead of the set at 13-12 following a strong attack from middle blocker Bartlomiej Lemanski. Kamil Semeniuk, Tomasz Fornal, and other players under Nikola Grbic's guidance showcased impressive physical, technical, and tactical skills, paving the way for their decisive 3-0 victory.
France vs. Finland
France has secured its place as the second finalist in the European Championship. In their semi-final match, after winning the first set convincingly, they faced a comeback from the Finnish team, who proved to be a challenging opponent when playing at their best. With Jokela consistently performing well, Kunnari's formation managed to level the score. However, Giani's team regained their form from the third set onwards, ultimately winning the match 3-1 (25-17, 18-25, 25-18, 25-15) and earning their spot in the championship match.
