The West Indies cricket team will face India in the upcoming two-Test series without their promising fast bowler, Shamar Joseph, who has been ruled out due to an injury. His place in the squad will be taken by Johann Layne, an uncapped 22-year-old pace-bowling all-rounder.

Cricket West Indies (CWI) confirmed Joseph`s injury via a tweet, stating he would undergo further assessment before the white-ball tour of Bangladesh. The exact nature of his injury, however, was not specified. Following the conclusion of the Test series in India on October 14, the West Indies are scheduled to play three One-Day Internationals (ODIs) in Bangladesh starting October 18, followed by three Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is) from October 27 to November 1.
This period marks a demanding schedule for the West Indies across various formats. After their commitments in Bangladesh, the team is set to embark on an extensive tour of New Zealand, which includes five T20Is, three ODIs, and three Tests. Currently, the squad is in the UAE, participating in a three-match T20I series against Nepal, which commenced on September 27.
Shamar Joseph`s Impact and Johann Layne`s Arrival
Shamar Joseph has quickly established himself in Test cricket, having taken 51 wickets in just 11 matches at an impressive average of 21.66. His Test career began with a memorable five-wicket haul on debut against Australia in January 2024, signaling his potential as a future star.
Johann Layne, at 22, joins the national squad with a commendable first-class record. He has played 19 first-class matches, securing 66 wickets at an average of 22.28. Beyond his bowling, Layne has also contributed with the bat, scoring 495 runs at an average of 19.03. His bowling performances include four five-wicket hauls and three four-wicket hauls across 34 red-ball innings.
Layne`s recent form includes two four-day matches for West Indies A against South Africa A in June, where he scored 62 runs and picked up a wicket in each of his three bowling innings. He had a particularly successful season for the West Indies Academy in the most recent domestic first-class competition, culminating in a six-wicket haul against the Windward Islands. In that tournament, Layne claimed an outstanding 27 wickets in six matches at an impressive average of 15.88, with two five-wicket hauls and two four-wicket hauls.
Layne will strengthen the West Indies pace attack, joining established bowlers such as Alzarri Joseph, Jayden Seales, and Anderson Phillip. The squad also features all-rounder Justin Greaves, alongside spin options Jomel Warrican, Khary Pierre, and captain Roston Chase.
