Phil Simmons, the coach of the Bangladesh cricket team, has expressed his satisfaction with the `exciting and aggressive` brand of cricket his squad has displayed during the T20I series against Afghanistan. He specifically commended the significant batting efforts from the team`s lower middle order.

Bangladesh currently leads the three-match series 2-0, having successfully chased down targets even after experiencing batting collapses. In the opening match, they faced considerable difficulty against Rashid Khan, losing six wickets for only nine runs before Nurul Hasan and Rishad Hossain secured the win. The second match saw them lose three early wickets during the powerplay, but the middle order, bolstered by another unbeaten 31 from Nurul, rescued the innings.

Simmons noted the confidence boost derived from winning tight contests, stating, “The positive aspect of winning close games is the confidence it instills for future close encounters.” He humorously added, “While it`s beneficial for the team, it`s not ideal for our hearts.” He further praised the team`s depth, observing, “Yesterday, our openers demonstrated their capabilities, and today, the lower middle order proved their mettle.”

Simmons articulated the team`s desired playing style: “We aim to play exciting, aggressive cricket, and that`s precisely what we`ve achieved.” He highlighted the improvement against Afghanistan`s strong spin attack, remarking, “We handled their spinners effectively today, which is their main strength. Although we didn`t perform as well against them yesterday, our performance was significantly better today. We accomplished our objectives. Nurul played an outstanding innings that brought us back from a difficult situation. Jaker Ali and Shamin Hossain laid the groundwork, and Nurul then completed the task. This is exactly the kind of responsibility we`ve been urging our batsmen to embrace when given the opportunity.”

Simmons also downplayed any concerns regarding Jaker`s recent form. The Bangladesh captain had just scored 32 runs off 25 balls, reaching double figures for the first time in four innings and hitting his first six in seven innings.

Dismissing worries about Jaker, Simmons stated, “Across international cricket, it`s common for batsmen to experience a few failures. I see no issue; he`s had a couple of challenging games, which is typical for any batsman. That`s just how cricket is.”

Bangladesh`s bowlers demonstrated significant improvement in both matches, with Shoriful Islam, Nasum Ahmed, and Mohammad Saifuddin delivering economical spells. In the second T20I, Bangladesh conceded only 35 runs in the powerplay and a mere 40 runs in the final five overs, effectively restricting Afghanistan to a sub-par total.

Simmons remarked on the bowling unit`s progress: “I believe our bowling has shown consistent improvement and has now reached a point where we can confidently rely on it, regardless of the combination we employ.” He emphasized, “Our bowling has been exceptionally good over the past five to seven weeks, which is a testament to our ongoing development.”

He further credited the bowlers, stating, “Our bowling performances have been instrumental in our position in the last two games. Yesterday, despite a strong start from the opposition, we managed to rein them in. Today, they again started well, but we bowled excellently in the middle overs and particularly towards the end.”
