Spanish authorities stated on Tuesday their belief that Liverpool forward Diogo Jota was exceeding the speed limit during a highway collision last week that tragically resulted in the deaths of both himself and his brother, Andre Silva. Spain`s Civil Guard continues its investigation into the incident, with officials reiterating Tuesday their view that Jota was at the wheel when the crash occurred.
Jota, a prominent player for both Liverpool and the Portuguese national team, was traveling with his brother in a Lamborghini. The vehicle reportedly suffered a tire blowout, causing it to veer off the highway, crash, and catch fire.
According to reports from Portuguese media citing the Associated Press, Jota was apparently heading to Santander to catch a ferry to England. He was planning to rejoin the Liverpool squad, having reportedly been advised against flying after a recent lung procedure.
These initial findings from Spanish authorities emerge days after a joint funeral service was held for Jota and Silva in their homeland of Portugal. The service was attended by his teammates from both Liverpool and the Portuguese national team.
Jota is survived by his wife and three children. His death occurred tragically only weeks after he and his wife married during Liverpool`s offseason break.
