Thirty-year-old forward Steve Mounié could be on the verge of returning to French football. The Benin international, currently plying his trade with German Bundesliga side Augsburg, is reportedly the subject of transfer discussions between his current club and French Ligue 1 outfit SCO Angers, as understood by L’Équipe.
Angers is facing a significant challenge with an impending departure. It was the crucial goals from Esteban Lepaul that were instrumental in securing the club`s survival in Ligue 1 last season. Furthermore, his solitary goal on the opening weekend of the current campaign accounts for the team`s only victory so far. However, the French forward is now poised to make a move to Stade Rennais.
Lepaul`s imminent departure leaves a considerable void in Angers` attacking line. It appears that Mounié, whose most recent stint in France was with Stade Brestois, has been identified as Lepaul`s potential successor. During his time at Brest, he famously forged an impressive partnership with Martin Satriano, a collaboration that significantly contributed to the team`s historic third-place finish in Ligue 1 just two seasons prior.
