Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey is reportedly on the verge of completing a transfer to Villarreal within days, according to sources familiar with the negotiations.
Partey recently attended Westminster magistrates court for his initial hearing, facing five counts of rape and one of sexual assault involving three women, with alleged incidents occurring in 2021 and 2022. He has vehemently denied all accusations. During the hearing, Partey was granted provisional bail, subject to conditions such as informing the court of any change of address or international travel.
The 32-year-old, who left Arsenal upon his contract`s expiry, was formally charged on July 4th. He is now poised for a return to professional football, with an official unveiling as a Villarreal player anticipated shortly. Sources indicate Partey has successfully passed his medical examination and reached an agreement on a two-year contract.
While Partey drew interest from Saudi Arabian clubs, his move to Villarreal offers the prospect of Champions League football next summer. Before joining Arsenal, the Ghana international spent eight years in Spain, beginning with Leganes, then progressing to Atletico Madrid, including short loan stints at Mallorca and Almeria.
Partey`s initial arrest occurred in July 2022, with the recent charges emerging from a Metropolitan Police investigation spanning over three years. Despite the ongoing inquiry, the midfielder continued to play for Arsenal until his contract concluded, with discussions even taking place regarding an extension to his 2020 deal. He departed the North London club after making 167 appearances.
