UEFA Decision Places Lyon in Europa League, Crystal Palace in Conference League

Football & Cricket

UEFA has officially confirmed Olympique Lyonnais`s participation in the Europa League for the upcoming season. Lyon secured their spot in Europe`s second-tier competition by finishing sixth in the Ligue 1 standings and benefiting from Paris Saint-Germain`s Coupe de France victory.

The confirmation follows a review by UEFA`s Club Financial Control Body concerning potential conflicts related to multi-club ownership. Lyon`s majority owner, John Textor, also holds a significant share in Premier League club Crystal Palace.

UEFA noted that both clubs were found to be in breach of the multi-club ownership criteria as stipulated in their regulations (Art 5.01), effective from March 1, 2025. However, taking into account factors such as Lyon`s successful appeal regarding financial compliance and their higher league finish compared to Crystal Palace, UEFA decided to accept Lyon`s entry into the Europa League while reassigning Crystal Palace to the lower-tier Conference League.
