The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has announced a significant alteration to its Champions League final schedule, moving the match kickoff time to 6 p.m. local time (12 p.m. ET). This change departs from the customary 9 p.m. start, primarily motivated by UEFA`s aim to enhance the overall experience for fans.
This decision, disclosed recently, is specifically set to commence with the 2026 final, which will be hosted at Budapest`s iconic Puskás Arena. While the immediate focus is on 2026, it remains to be confirmed whether this earlier timing will be adopted permanently for all future Champions League finals. The new schedule ensures the game concludes during daylight hours, promising more convenient and safer travel for spectators leaving the stadium. Additionally, it aims to broaden the match`s global appeal by making it more accessible to a wider international television and digital audience.
In an official statement, UEFA explained that the initiative is “designed to enhance the overall matchday experience for fans, teams, and host cities by optimising logistics and operations, while delivering several tangible benefits.” The organization further elaborated on its objective: “Our goal is to make matchday a truly enjoyable experience for everyone who wants to be part of the excitement, while creating a welcoming atmosphere that makes it easy for families and children to attend the biggest and most important club football match of the season.”
Highlighted benefits include improved access to public transport for traveling supporters after the match, ensuring a safer and more convenient journey home. For the host cities, the change is projected to boost the event`s positive economic impact by allowing fans to extend their celebrations into the evening. The adjusted kickoff time also aligns with a more favorable broadcasting window, aimed at reaching an even broader worldwide audience, with a particular emphasis on engaging younger viewers.
Under the previous 9 p.m. kickoff, matches often didn`t conclude until 11 p.m. at the earliest. When factoring in potential extra time, penalty shootouts, and the post-match trophy presentation, fans could face departures from the stadium closer to midnight, presenting considerable travel challenges. The new schedule seeks to alleviate these issues, providing a smoother experience for all attendees.
Before implementing this notable shift, UEFA actively engaged in consultations with Football Supporters Europe, the confederation`s official liaison for matters impacting fans, ensuring that supporter perspectives were considered.
For the current season, the Champions League final is scheduled for May 30, with the competition`s main league phase having commenced on September 16. The draw for the league phase was also conducted recently, setting the stage for the highly anticipated tournament.
