Patrick Vieira, the esteemed head coach of Genoa and a legendary figure from his playing days at Arsenal, has clarified that he received no communication regarding the vacant managerial position at Inter Milan earlier this summer, despite persistent media speculation.
Speaking from Genoa`s pre-season training camp in Moena, in an interview with SkySport (with quotes relayed by TMW), Vieira explicitly denied any involvement in talks to succeed Simone Inzaghi. Inter ultimately appointed Cristian Chivu to the role after Inzaghi`s departure for Saudi Arabia.
Vieira Highlights Genoa`s Appeal to Players
Vieira also shared his thoughts on Genoa`s transfer window strategy as the club aims to bolster its squad for the upcoming season. He stressed the importance of having experienced players within the team, especially during the early stages of the season, to help new signings integrate effectively. He specifically mentioned Mattia Bani, Ruslan Malinovskyi, and Caleb Ekuban as crucial figures in this regard, praising their role in guiding newcomers both on the pitch and in acclimating them to the club`s environment.
Mattia Bani boasts an impressive five years with Genoa, accumulating 108 Serie A appearances. While Ruslan Malinovskyi joined in 2023, his extensive Serie A and international experience is invaluable for settling new arrivals. Caleb Ekuban, signed from Turkish side Trabzonspor in 2021, has made 91 league appearances for the club.

In a related development, Genoa is reportedly close to finalizing a season-long loan deal for Inter`s promising young talent, Valentin Carboni. The talented Argentine recently scored the decisive goal in Inter`s Club World Cup victory against Urawa and is now set to gain further experience with Vieira`s side.

Commenting on Carboni`s impending arrival, Vieira emphasized Genoa`s appeal as a club with much to offer players, describing it as a “beautiful place to live” where newcomers consistently perform well and feel comfortable. He underscored Carboni`s quality, stating that acquiring such caliber players is crucial for Genoa`s ambition to surpass last year`s performance.
Vieira concluded by acknowledging the inherent difficulty of remaining in Serie A but expressed confidence in the team`s ability to evolve their playing style. He asserted that while there is considerable work ahead, the challenges do not deter them.
