Wesley: A Dream Realized with Roma Transfer

Football & Cricket

As anticipated, Brazilian wingback Wesley has departed today for Rome to undergo his medical examination, finalizing his significant transfer from Flamengo. The deal is valued at an initial €25 million, potentially rising to €30 million with performance-related bonuses. Upon his departure, Wesley expressed his profound excitement, stating he is “making a dream come true.”

The highly sought-after wingback had been a primary target for coach Gian Piero Gasperini, even during his tenure at Atalanta, though the negotiations for his acquisition proved to be protracted.

The agreement was ultimately reached for the aforementioned fee after Flamengo successfully secured Emerson Royal from Milan for €9 million as Wesley`s replacement, paving the way for the young Brazilian`s move to Italy.

Wesley himself shared images on social media from the airport, prominently featuring a small Italian flag, and spoke briefly to reporters prior to his flight to the Italian capital, showcasing his eagerness for the new chapter.

“This move is a dream come true for me, but it also brings a touch of sadness as I depart Flamengo,” the 21-year-old confessed. “I am immensely grateful to God for everything he is doing in my life, and I extend my thanks to all the fans. As I’ve often stated in interviews, I wouldn’t be where I am today without the criticism I’ve faced. I understand there’s still much progress to be made, and I need to develop further, but it’s by confronting criticism that I’ve learned to transform challenges into opportunities.”

Wesley has already earned two senior caps for Brazil, both in 2025, and delivered notable performances for Flamengo during the FIFA Club World Cup, attracting widespread attention for his potential.

“My ambition is to achieve championship success with Roma, just as I did here with Flamengo, and I sincerely hope to return to Flamengo one day; this isn`t a final farewell. When I eventually come back to Brazil, it will undoubtedly be to Flamengo,” he affirmed, highlighting his enduring connection to his former club.

He rose through Flamengo’s prestigious youth academy ranks, joining the senior team in January 2023 and quickly establishing himself as a key player.
