Reports indicate that UEFA is nearing a crucial decision regarding a potential suspension of Israel from European football competitions. This move could significantly affect the Italian national team, as both nations are currently situated in the same World Cup qualification group.
Here’s an overview of what might unfold if the European governing body proceeds with a suspension.
Will UEFA Ban Israel from European Competitions?
According to reports published by The Times on Thursday, UEFA is expected to make a decision next week on whether to ban Israel from participating in its competitions. Sources suggest that a majority of UEFA`s executive committee, which includes FIGC President Gabriele Gravina, is in favor of such a suspension.
This development follows recommendations from a UN advisory panel, which urged UEFA and FIFA to implement a ban after an inquiry concluded that Israel had committed genocide in Gaza. A common argument supporting this action draws parallels to Russia`s exclusion from European competitions since its 2022 invasion of Ukraine, suggesting Israel should face similar repercussions.

Consequences for Italy if UEFA Suspends Israel
Italy and Israel are both contenders in Group I of the European World Cup qualifiers. Their most recent encounter in September saw Italy narrowly defeat Israel 5-4, a match that marked Gennaro Gattuso`s second game in charge of the Azzurri.
Currently, Italy holds second place in Group I with nine points from four matches. Israel also has nine points, though from five games, placing them third in the standings. Norway leads the group, having secured a maximum 15 points from five matches.

According to Friday`s reports from La Repubblica, if Israel were to be suspended from UEFA competitions, including World Cup qualifiers, Group I would likely be reduced from five teams to four. In this scenario, the team finishing at the top of the group would still automatically qualify for the 2026 World Cup, and the second-place team would still earn a spot in the play-offs.
However, a significant consequence would be the nullification of all of Israel’s recent World Cup qualifying results. This means Italy`s current points tally would drop from nine to six, as their recent 5-4 victory against Israel would be deemed void. Italy’s goal difference would also decrease by one.
Similarly, Norway, the only other nation in Group I to have defeated Israel so far, would see their points total reduced from 15 to 12. Their goal difference would also decrease by two, reflecting their 4-2 win against Israel at the start of their qualifying campaign.
