Kane Williamson arrives for the game, India vs New Zealand, Champions Trophy, Dubai, March 2, 2025
Kane Williamson last played for New Zealand in the Champions Trophy in March.

New Zealand`s key batsman, Kane Williamson, will sit out the upcoming T20 International series against England on home soil but aims to rejoin the squad for the subsequent One Day International series. Williamson, who recently arrived back in New Zealand, last competed internationally in March during the Champions Trophy final against India in Dubai.

The 35-year-old Williamson, holding a casual contract with New Zealand Cricket (NZC), had previously opted out of the three-match T20I series versus Australia and skipped the Zimbabwe tour. These absences allowed him to participate in county cricket and the Hundred tournament, fulfilling commitments with Middlesex.

Coach Rob Walter of New Zealand confirmed that Williamson has also been managing a “minor medical issue” over the last month, necessitating additional recovery time.

Walter stated, “He is undeniably a world-class athlete, and we anticipate that these two weeks will adequately prepare him for both the ODI series against England and the subsequent tour by the West Indies.”

Meanwhile, regular white-ball captain Mitchell Santner returns after undergoing abdominal surgery, ready to lead the team. Conversely, fast bowler Ben Sears faces a setback, sidelined by a left-hamstring injury incurred during training last week. An MRI scan confirmed a hamstring tear, mandating a recovery period of three to four weeks.

In positive news, Rachin Ravindra, a close friend and Wellington teammate of Sears, is poised for a comeback. He was previously unavailable for the Australia T20Is due to a facial injury sustained when he collided with the boundary boards during fielding practice at Bay Oval before the first T20I.

Other key players currently out of contention due to various injuries include Finn Allen (foot), Adam Milne (ankle), Will O`Rourke (back), Glenn Phillips (groin), and Lockie Ferguson (hamstring).

Notably, wrist-spinner Ish Sodhi, who recently earned the title of New Zealand`s most-capped T20I player, was not included in the squad. Ravindra will provide a third spin option alongside captain Santner and Bracewell, with Mark Chapman also available for left-arm spin if required.

Coach Walter expressed his pleasure regarding Santner`s return: “It’s fantastic to have Mitch back. Beyond his leadership, he`s among the elite white-ball spinners globally, and his expertise will be invaluable.” He also added, “It’s equally pleasing to welcome back Rachin, who was unfortunately sidelined for the Australia series and is genuinely thrilled for this upcoming series.”

Auckland mates Jimmy Neesham and Bevon Jacobs are part of New Zealand`s T20I squad
Auckland teammates Jimmy Neesham and Bevon Jacobs are included in New Zealand`s T20I squad.

Kyle Jamieson, Matt Henry, Jacob Duffy, Zak Foulkes, and all-rounder Jimmy Neesham have all retained their places in the squad.

Neesham initially joined the Australia T20Is as a replacement for the injured Ravindra, delivering a standout performance in the third T20I at Mount Maunganui with an impressive 4 for 26, dismantling Australia`s middle order.

Neesham, who recently celebrated his 35th birthday, harbors strong aspirations of representing New Zealand in the 2026 T20 World Cup, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka.

Following the third T20I against Australia, Neesham conveyed his clear ambition: “My goal is to win a World Cup for New Zealand, and that’s why I continue to play and remain available. It’s a very distinct objective for me. Regarding selection in the six months prior to the tournament, that`s beyond my control. However, I’ll simply stay prepared. Whether I’m included in pre-tournament squads or not, I’ll accept it and strive to perform optimally whenever I’m selected for any team.”

The T20I series against England is scheduled to commence on October 18 at Hagley Oval in Christchurch, which will also host the second T20I on October 20. The teams will then move to Auckland for the third and concluding T20I. The subsequent three-match ODI series is slated from October 26 to November 1.

Significantly, Williamson`s potential return for New Zealand could occur on October 26 at his home ground, Bay Oval.
