Since Kusal Mendis has been leading the team as vice captain for the previous few months and actually led them in one of Sri Lanka’s warm-up matches, which Shanaka had missed, the management of the Sri Lankan squad acknowledged to ESPNcricinfo that he will take Shanaka’s place as captain. However, Sri Lanka’s World Cup campaign hasn’t gone well thus far, as they’ve lost to South Africa and Pakistan. They may benefit from the inclusion of a bowling all-rounder, as they have given up an incredible 775 runs in the first two games.
