Dasun Shanaka, who is injured, is replaced in the Sri Lanka squad by Chamika Karunaratne

Dasun Shanaka, who is injured, is replaced in the Sri Lankan squad by Chamika Karunaratne. In Sri Lanka’s World Cup roster, captain Dasun Shanaka has been replaced by Chamika Karunaratne.

Shanaka injured his quadriceps during the team’s most recent game against Pakistan. It is anticipated that this injury will take three weeks to heal, during which Sri Lanka will have played the majority of their round-robin matches.

Karunaratne is a seam-bowling all-rounder who bats down the order; he is essentially a like-for-like replacement. While Karunaratne’s bowling has usually been his primary focus, Shanaka’s strength lies in his batting. As a standby player, he has been traveling with the team and will be available for Monday’s match between Australia and Sri Lanka.

Since Kusal Mendis has been leading the team as vice captain for the previous few months and actually led them in one of Sri Lanka’s warm-up matches, which Shanaka had missed, the management of the Sri Lankan squad acknowledged to ESPNcricinfo that he will take Shanaka’s place as captain. In addition, team manager Mahinda Halangoda stated that Shanaka will stay with the club “for the time being” even though he is leaving the squad.

Shanaka had been awful at bat for the past few months, which put a lot of pressure on his spot in the starting eleven. Only once in his previous 15 ODI innings during which he played the Zimbabwe World Cup Qualifier had he scored above 35.

But the team had performed admirably for the most part under his leadership, winning that qualifier without a loss and qualifying for the current Asia Cup final, which was primarily played in Sri Lanka.

However, Sri Lanka’s World Cup campaign hasn’t gone well thus far, as they’ve lost to South Africa and Pakistan. They may benefit from the inclusion of a bowling all-rounder, as they have given up an incredible 775 runs in the first two games.
