Charlie Allison celebrating his innings for Essex
Charlie Allison steered Essex over the line with 32 not out.

Charlie Allison, a standout performer for Essex in an otherwise challenging season, calmly guided his team to a seven-wicket victory, sealing their Rothesay County Championship campaign. The 20-year-old right-hander finished on 32 not out from 34 balls, hitting two sixes off Jake Ball to complete the chase of 95 runs in just 18.4 overs.

The final morning wasn`t entirely without tension. Somerset captain Lewis Gregory provided a glimmer of hope for an improbable upset, dismissing both Dean Elgar and Tom Westley early in the Essex innings. Gregory then took a crucial catch to end Paul Walter`s impactful knock of 30 from 31 balls. Walter, who scored a century in the first innings, departed with 39 runs still required. Gregory bowled with fierce determination, consistently beating the bat`s outside edge and finishing with figures of 2 for 43 from his nine unchanged overs, causing noticeable jitters in the Essex camp.

For much of the first two and a half days, the match appeared destined for a drab draw, with a mid-afternoon handshake seeming inevitable for both sides in a largely forgettable Championship season. However, the narrative dramatically shifted on day three. After Essex had themselves collapsed from an overnight 295 for 2 to 438 all out, securing a nominal five-run lead, Jamie Porter unleashed a monumental spell. In just 34 overs, he spearheaded a devastating Somerset collapse, bowling them out for a mere 99 runs. Porter`s exceptional 4 for 18 effort brought him agonizingly close to another 50-wicket season.

This victory confirmed Essex`s Division One survival, a fitting end to a season where Somerset ultimately settled for a mid-table finish despite an early-season flurry of three consecutive wins in May that briefly hinted at a title challenge.

Despite having the entire day to score the remaining runs, the chase began with a hint of drama. The opening partnership, which had yielded 277 runs in the first innings, lasted only seven balls in the second. Dean Elgar was removed for a golden duck, trapped leg before by Gregory. Tom Westley survived the remainder of Gregory`s intense over and found his rhythm with a drive for four off Craig Overton, followed by an emphatic pull shot. However, Westley soon fell to Gregory as well, nicking an outside-off delivery that wicketkeeper James Rew expertly caught.

Paul Walter continued to score briskly, converting twos into threes, helping Essex reach fifty within nine overs. Charlie Allison then took charge, confidently stepping down the pitch to smash Overton for four through extra cover. Although Overton had been somewhat expensive, his replacement, Jake Ball, made an immediate impact, dismissing Walter with his very first delivery as the centurion attempted a big heave.

Undeterred, Allison accelerated the scoring. He decisively deposited Ball over long leg for a six, bringing Essex within two runs of their target, and then repeated the shot in the same area to secure the seven-wicket triumph.
