OGC Nice faces a significant uphill battle in their quest to advance in the UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds. In front of a full house at the Allianz Riviera, Nice suffered a 2-0 home defeat to SL Benfica. The Portuguese club scored both of their goals in the second half, putting them in a commanding position for the crucial return leg scheduled for next Tuesday.
Benfica was widely regarded as the team every club hoped to avoid in the draw, and their performance vividly demonstrated why. Their relentless intensity and organized play proved unmatched, allowing them to deservedly take the upper hand. In the post-match press conference, manager Franck Haise did not express frustration with his own squad but instead highlighted the formidable strength of their opponents.
“Yes, I think they are stronger than us. We knew that before and it was confirmed at the end of the match. I believe we gave basically everything we had,” stated the Nice manager.
He further added:
“We felt that, over the course of the match, despite doing a lot, we struggled to create clear chances, and for them, it felt simple. We are not in the same category. We knew that beforehand, and we tried to disrupt them, but by the end of the match, we understood we are not on the same level.”
Naturally, there is widespread pessimism regarding the possibility of turning the tie around in Portugal next week. Despite this, Haise insisted his side would approach the match with “the same determination” as they did on Wednesday night. However, he concluded by stating that the significant gap between the two teams was “just a reality.”
