How Pakistan Can Make It to the 2023 Cricket World Cup Semi-Finals Under Fire? As the competition moves into the second half at the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023, Pakistan finds themselves in a difficult situation. Despite having a strong start, the 1992 champions have struggled with consistency and, at this point, their status in the competition is doubtful.

Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka in the World Cup record run chase after winning their initial game against the Netherlands in Hyderabad. But when they traveled to Ahmedabad to play the hosts, India, the roles began to reverse.

After a dismal batting effort against India, Australia suffered a seven-wicket loss and an overwhelming thrashing at the hands of their opponents. Australia reached 367/9 thanks to centuries from Mitchell Marsh and David Warner in Bengaluru, while Pakistan could only muster 305 runs in reply.

The fact that Afghanistan defeated Pakistan in their first ODI in Chennai only served to exacerbate their predicament. With ease, the Afghan batting team overcame a formidable 283-run mark to win by eight wickets, knocking Pakistan out of the top four. The one bright spot for them is that, despite losing three straight games, their net run rate (now -0.400) did not suffer a significant setback.

They still have four games to go and can yet make it to the semi-finals, but they will need some help from other clubs. In Chennai, Pakistan will next play South Africa, then Bangladesh, New Zealand, and England.

Due to their excellent play, South Africa, New Zealand, and India have significantly separated themselves from the other teams. The fourth berth, which is presently held by Australia, is the only one up for grabs for these three teams with one foot in the semi-finals.
