Juan Jesus on Napoli’s Defensive Transformation and Conte’s Unwavering Drive

Football & Cricket

Brazilian defender Juan Jesus recently commended Napoli`s notable improvements in defense and shared insights into how head coach Antonio Conte has successfully instilled a formidable winning attitude within the team.

In a recent interview, Jesus articulated the synergy required for robust defense: “When a team operates as a cohesive defensive unit, it significantly simplifies the roles for the backline. We take full responsibility for the errors we made two years ago; there`s no attempt to conceal them. Instead, those very mistakes became pivotal for our growth, teaching us a crucial lesson: we must never again allow our vigilance to falter.”

Last season, Juan Jesus appeared in 15 Serie A matches for Napoli. He also notably wore the captain’s armband during the club`s 3-1 Coppa Italia defeat against Lazio.

The Impact of Antonio Conte

Commenting on Napoli`s current pre-season training, Jesus expressed his satisfaction: “I am delighted to be here in Castel di Sangro; it`s a location I`ve frequented for several years now. While some might have been surprised by my prolonged stay or underestimated my capabilities, I`ve always been acutely aware of my own qualities and the contributions I could offer the team.”

He also acknowledged the pivotal role of former Napoli head coach Luciano Spalletti, who led the club from 2021 to 2023: “Spalletti was the first individual to truly place his trust in me. Without his belief, I genuinely believe I would not have contributed to Napoli`s history in the way I have. Now, with Antonio Conte`s arrival, I also feel his confidence in my abilities. I am immensely proud to have dedicated a significant portion of my career here and to have celebrated two Scudetti titles. My hope is that we can continue to write more history together.”

Reflecting on his playing time under Spalletti, Jesus added, “Under his management, I estimate I played around 18 or 19 league matches, as he frequently rotated the defensive line-up, involving players like Kim, Rrahmani, and Østigard. Last year, I was presented with more opportunities, which enabled me to exert my absolute best on the field.”

Describing Antonio Conte, who took charge of Napoli last summer, Jesus praised his distinct coaching philosophy: “Conte possesses a very precise methodology, and he instills in us the principle of relentless effort. Given his remarkable career and commanding personality, he has consistently been someone who never retreats, constantly motivating us to deliver 100% of our capacity. This intensity and dedication are unmistakably evident in our performances on the pitch.”
