New Zealand will give Kane Williamson more time to recover before the ODI World Cup in India. New Zealand will consider including captain Kane Williamson in its squad for the ICC World Cup in India in October, even though he will miss the first few games due to a knee injury.
Williamson will join New Zealand for its series against England before the 50-overs World Cup to continue his recovery from a ruptured right knee ACL suffered in the Indian Premier League in April.
There are little over 50 days until New Zealand takes on England in its World Cup opener on October 5. New Zealand selectors, according to coach Gary Stead, will give Williamson every opportunity to show his fitness.
“Kane’s working on a day-by-day, week-by-week process, and we’ve been clear and careful with him that we don’t look too far ahead,” Stead explained. “He’s progressed as expected, if not better in some cases.”

“However, ACL injuries can be problematic because they are unique to each individual. We’ll gather as many medical professionals as possible around Kane to assist us make that decision in three weeks.
Stead stated that if Williamson continues to show indications of improvement, New Zealand will consider including him in their World Cup squad even if he is not immediately available. That squad will be chosen in mid-September, giving Williamson a short window to persuade the New Zealand medical staff that he is healthy.
Stead also stated that Williamson’s selection, even if he had to miss matches, is “something we are discussing.” Williamson piqued viewers’ interest recently by posting video of himself taking throw-downs in the nets.
“He’s not facing bowlers yet, but he’s basically doing everything else,” Stead explained. “With the knee, we’re just watching how it twists. “We couldn’t have asked for anything more from him in that situation.” It’s exciting to see where he’s at and how he’s progressing, but that doesn’t guarantee he’ll be a member of the World Cup squad just yet.”
