Usman Khawaja, an Australian cricket player, has been outspoken in his support of Palestine throughout the Gaza conflict.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has chastised Australia’s opener Usman Khawaja for wearing a black armband during the first test match against Pakistan in Perth.

Pakistani-Muslim Khawaja has been outspoken in his support of Palestine throughout the ongoing Israel-Hamas confrontation in Gaza.

During training prior to the first test, Khawaja wore shoes with the phrases “freedom is a human right” and “all lives are equal” printed on the sides. Khawaja changed to the black armband during the test after CA told him that wearing the shoes would go against ICC regulations.

The first Muslim player for Australia, Khawaja, posted an Instagram story late on Wednesday with the subject “24,000 civilians, 10,000 children” to further express his worries.

Usman Khawaja is accused of violating ICC Clothing and Equipment Regulations, Clause F.

Khawaja received a reprimand from the ICC for his act of wearing a black armband. The ICC claimed that Khawaja did not obtain approval for the armband before wearing it in Perth, a move he claimed was in solidarity of the Palestinians in Gaza. ICC intervened on Thursday night in response to the 36-year-old’s “breach.”

According to the ICC Playing Conditions page, Usman Khawaja has been charged with violating Clause F of the Clothing and Equipment Regulations.

“As required by the rules regarding personal messages, Usman wore an armband during the first Test Match against Pakistan without first getting permission from Cricket Australia or the ICC to do so. According to the statement, this violation falls under the category of “other breaches,” and the first offense is punishable by reprimand.

Usman Khawaja has submitted a formal appeal to Cricket Australia and the International Cricket Council for permission to continue promoting human rights in the Israel-Gaza conflict, according to individuals close to CA who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the topic freely.
