Indian spinner Varun Chakravarthy recently shared a photograph on Instagram, once again fueling speculation and discussion among fans regarding its underlying implications.

India recently clinched their third T20 World Cup title, becoming the first team to achieve this milestone. They secured a dominant 96-run victory over New Zealand, amassing an impressive 255/5 with significant contributions from Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, and Tilak Varma, before bowling out New Zealand for just 159. This triumph marked India as both the first team to successfully defend the T20 World Cup title and the first host nation to win the coveted trophy.

Among a carousel of images posted on Instagram, one notable photograph shows the Indian spinner alongside the T20 World Cup trophy, casually sipping from a coffee cup. Fans were quick to interpret this gesture as a renewed subtle taunt directed at the Pakistan cricket team, drawing parallels to a similar controversial incident following a previous Asia Cup.

Chakravarthy had previously made a comparable gesture following India’s victory against Pakistan in the final of a prior Asia Cup. Due to persistent political tensions between the two nations, Indian players notably refused to accept the trophy from the Asian Cricket Council Chairman, who also served as Pakistan’s Internal Minister. As a consequence, the team returned home without the actual championship trophy.

The subsequent day, Chakravarthy shared a photograph of himself in bed with a coffee cup positioned nearby. He later elucidated in an interview that the cup acted as a stand-in for the trophy, with which he had initially intended to capture the image. He elaborated, “I was certain we would win… I had meticulously planned everything – to sleep with the trophy beside me and take a picture. However, after the match, there was no trophy next to me. Only a coffee cup, so I proceeded with that.”

Despite the surrounding controversy, the mystery spinner finished the T20 World Cup as the joint-highest wicket-taker, claiming 14 scalps. Nevertheless, his economy rate of 9.25 (conceding 287 runs in 31 overs) underscored the somewhat inconsistent nature of his campaign throughout the tournament.
