Zainab Abbas Issues an apology for previous social media posts and addresses her departure from India, citing a “need for space.” The sports broadcaster Zainab Abbas addressed her unexpected departure from India on Thursday. She made it clear that she was neither expelled nor asked to leave the country and apologized for her insulting postings.

Abbas was in India as a member of the broadcast crew for the 2023 World Cup, but she left the country earlier this week after a complaint was made against her in New Delhi by a lawyer who claimed she had previously sent “derogatory” tweets on the Hindu faith.

An account using Abbas’ name in the Twitter handle was posted on microblogging site X (previously Twitter) in 2014, which served as the basis for the lawsuit.

After she left the nation, some local media outlets claimed that she was forced to leave, while others said that she was deported. She has since rejected these allegations.

She wrote, “I was neither asked to leave nor was I deported.” “However, when the internet response developed, I felt threatened and terrified.

“And even though there was no imminent danger to my safety, all sides of my family and friends were worried. I wanted some time and space to think about what had happened.

“I am aware of and sincerely regret the damage my tweets have caused. They don’t reflect my beliefs or who I am as a person today, I want to be very clear about that,” she continued.

According to the article, the complainant had also asked for the filing of a first information report (FIR) against the speaker under several legal provisions “for making disparaging remarks about Hinduism and for anti-India statements.”

The attorney urged in his post on X that the broadcaster be taken from the roster of presenters for the current World Cup because “anti-Bharat people are not welcome in Bharat.”
