A former India captain is now Afghanistan’s World Cup coach. A former Indian great has been named Afghanistan’s coach for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

The Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) announced on Monday, October 02, that former India captain Ajay Jadeja will serve as Afghanistan’s coach for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023.

Jadeja comes with extensive knowledge of Indian circumstances and a plethora of experience. With 196 games under his belt and 5359 runs scored at an average of 37.47, including six hundreds and 30 half-centuries, he has an outstanding ODI record. Jadeja also played for India in 15 Test matches from 1992 to 2000.

He has competed for India in three World Cups, in 1992, 1996, and 1999. One of the highlights of India’s 1992 World Cup run was when Jadeja made a spectacular catch to get rid of Allan Border during their encounter against Australia in the group stage.

Currently in India, Afghanistan is preparing for the World Cup. However, after their match against South Africa was called off owing to severe rain in Thiruvananthapuram without a ball being bowled, their preparation was hindered during the first round of warm-up games.

On Tuesday, October 3, they will play again, this time against Sri Lanka in Guwahati, where they hope to gain some tournament experience.

The opening match of Afghanistan’s World Cup campaign is against Asian opponent Bangladesh on October 7 at the scenic HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala.
