Gus Atkinson is feeling prepared for Cricket World Cup 2023 duties following his unexpected call-up to England. Gus Atkinson believes The Hundred has prepared him for a step-up to the international fold despite the fact that he was taken by surprise by his World Cup selection. Atkinson is England’s newest pace weapon.
Atkinson was hopeful of being chosen for four T20 matches against New Zealand, but now that he has been selected for the ODI team and England’s preliminary World Cup party, he can aim even higher.
Atkinson had to put on his best poker face when taking a call from white-ball head coach Matthew Mott in the Oval Invincibles dressing room because he was shocked to be given the nod. Jofra Archer’s troublesome elbow has all but ended his hopes of participating in England’s 50-over title defence.
I wasn’t really expecting to be selected for the World Cup, he admitted to the PA news agency. To be selected for the ODIs and the World Cup was really cool, albeit I had heard stories about the New Zealand T20s.I’m just too happy. When I initially learned, I was at the Oval getting ready with the Invincibles, so it was really difficult to try and keep it a secret from people.But when I spoke to my family, they were clearly quite pleased and proud of me. This summer has been excellent, and everything happened very quickly. This was my first time using The Hundred, and it was excellent.
Every club has top tier hitters, and bowling against them has been beneficial. There is no reason why I can’t accomplish that on the world scene as I’ve been doing well against players from other countries in The Hundred.

Last week, Atkinson had a chance to make a mark on England captain Jos Buttler, who delivered a few rapid blows for the Manchester Originals but was ultimately defeated by a 94 mph free hit. Atkinson has appreciated the publicity he has had with all matches in The Hundred being televised, despite not being certain he can increase his speeds. “I’m not sure about that,” he remarked with a giggle.
It’s fantastic to be chosen by England without having to put in three or four years of graft. Atkinson has played in just two List A matches and has never travelled to India, the country where England will try to defend their world championship in October and November.
However, the 25-year-old is certain he has a system to succeed in any circumstances, regardless of the format, and he plans to ask Surrey teammate and close friend Reece Topley for assistance. “I don’t change too much when I go from four-day cricket to T20 cricket,” he claimed. When it comes to 50-over cricket, I’ll just keep it simple and try to concentrate on bowling my best ball.
