Neesham is eager to give ‘one last go’ at the ODI World Cup in 2023 following his heartbreak in 2019. Jimmy Neesham, an all-around player, is eager for “one last crack” at the elusive World Cup victory in India next month after nearly securing New Zealand’s first victory in the one-day competition in 2019.

Neesham joined the other players who were devastated by New Zealand’s heartbreaking loss to England in the 2019 final as he was named to the team’s 15-man roster for the competition on Monday.

After the teams could not be separated by a tie-breaking Super Over, New Zealand fell in a historic match at Lord’s on boundary count.

Neesham scored 13 runs in the Super Over, but England won because Martin Guptill was out trying to score the winning run on the final ball.

The New Zealand players are still bothered by the outcome four years later. According to Neesham, “I think it’s motivated all of us,” he said to reporters on Monday.

Despite choosing to end their contracts with New Zealand last year, fast bowler Boult and winger Neesham were both selected for the World Cup team.

The combination has been passed over for selection for most of the international schedule because selectors favour players who are under contract.

But on Sunday, Boult made his comeback with a promising three-wicket haul in the rain-drenched, 79-run loss to England in the second ODI in Southampton.
