Rehmanullah Gurbaz - Backbone of AFG Top Order

The third match of ICC Men’s cricket World cup 2023 is being played at Dharamsala where AFG are taking on BAN in order to open their account on points table. There is a tough competition going on between AFG batters and BAN spinners.

Afghanistan opener Rehmanullah Gurbaz has shown his class and temperament against the quick and spin bowling attack. Unfortunately, he misses his half century this time. His 47 off 62 provides handsome opportunity to next batters to extend the lead in the Cricket Worldcup 2023 against Bangladesh. He also manages to hit four 4s and one 6s.

Earlier in the AFG ODI career, Mohammad Shahzad and Hazratullah Zazai earned the fame for their destructive batting style.  Zazai only played 16 ODIs where he has scored 361 runs with highest 67 only.

On the other hand, Shahzad has played 84 ODIs where he managed to score 2727 with an average of 33.66 and strike rate of 88.48 with highest score of 131 not out. He has smashed 5 centuries and 2 half centuries in his brief ODI career.

Moreover, the third known opener for AFG in ODI is Noor Ali Zadran who has played 51 ODIs in all scoring 1216 averaging 25 and strike rate of 63 alognwith his highest score of 114.

These three openers were phenomenal but lacked consistency and technique. That’s why they couldn’t prolong their ODI career. AFG have been pursuit of someone who could have both: consistency and technique. At the end of the day, they have got what they have been looking for so long.

22-years old, Rehmanullah Gurbaz, has played 27 One Day Internationals managing 1005 runs with averaging over 39. His highest ODI score is 151 which came against  Pakistan in 2023 at Hambantota which is the 2nd highest individual score for AFG.
